چکیده

Many orga~lizat~ional problems can be decoinposed into nearly iildepeizdent subproblems the solution of which is the responsibility of independent agents. In this kind of work, which we call distributed work, the problems are only nearly independent since dependencies exist between the comlllitinents required from each agent. As a consequence of these dependencies, the coordination problelll becoines one of maintaining a consistent global solution in the face of the possibly conflicting activities of each agent. We define a normative model for coordination pr~t~ocols that indicates the formal requirements for maintaining a globally consistent solution. The model identifies several properties that the protocol must enforce, namely serializability, atomiczty, conzplete~iess, and soundness. We show that these properties are desirable in coordination protocols for distributed work problems.

Distributed Web Service Coordination for Collaboration Applications and Biological Workflows

In this dissertation work, we have investigated the main research thrust of decentralized coordination of workflows over web services. To address distributed workflow coordination, first we have developed “Web Coordination Bonds” as a capable set of dependency modeling primitives that enable each web service to manage its own dependencies. Web bond primitives are as powerful as extended Petri n...

A Formal Model of a Multi-step Coordination Protocol for Self-adaptive Software Using Coloured Petri Nets

Technology advances continue to make computing environments ever changing and more complex. In the presence of such environments software systems are increasingly expected to continue operating at run-time. As human intervention becomes costly, time-consuming and error-prone, these systems should be equipped with self-adaptation capabilities in order to adapt themselves in response to environme...

Using Knowledge to Optimally Achieve Coordination in Distributed Systems

The problem of coordinating the actions of individual processors is fundamental in distributed computing. Researchers have long endeavored to nd eecient solutions to a variety of problems involving coordination. Recently, processor knowledge has been used to characterize such solutions and to derive more eecient ones. Most of this work has concentrated on the relationship between common knowled...
